French Silks

These rare and unique pieces were made in Lyons, France for use in Paris by top couture houses. I have the pleasure of spending time each year in Paris selecting the most beautiful from an exclusive collection. Each piece is quite small, often only enough for one or two garments, but I always feel lucky to find them so we can offer you the very finest fabrics in the world.

Bianchini-Ferier of Lyons, France

From its beginnings in the 1880s the House of Bianchini-Férier has been associated with the world's most luxurious silks.

Working in close association with the leading couturiers of the day, Bianchini-Férier created fabrics which are considered standards today. One of the best known collaborations between an artist and a manufacturer was between Raoul Dufy and Bianchini-Férier. Dufy first designed textiles for Paul Poiret in 1911. Failing to imitate his bold hand wood-blocked patterns, Bianchini went to the source and in 1912 signed Dufy to an exclusive contract, then renewed it annually until the late 1920s

Within the industry, Bianchini was known especially for silk velvets and silk and metal brocades for haute couture, as well as exquisite hand-painted mousseline de soie.

For more than 100 years Bianchini-Férier has set the standard for fine fabrics, used the world over. Hailed as the longest continuously-running mill in Europe, Bianchini has remained the silk manufacturer of choice, combining invention and artistry in equal measure.

Asian Silks

As long as a thousand years ago, the main commercial activity between Asia and Europe took place along a tortuous route from Persia and the Black Sea to the west to China in the east, traversing central Asian deserts and the high Himalayan plateaus of Tibet. The primary currency of that trade was silk, and thus the term "silk road" refers to the paths traveled in the pursuit of commerce in silk. Today beautiful silks are made in many areas of Asia, each with its characteristic signature. The treasures included in our collection are as varied as their sources: China, Korea, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Japan. Email us with any queries you have about our Asian Couture Collection.

Indian Silks

Any excuse to visit India, but searching out silks is my favorite! Many of these were created in Varanasi, the cultural capital of India and home to many skilled makers of silk. Intricate hand embroidery and beading, wildly vibrant colors and infinite, creative variations are the hallmarks of Indian silks. ? Peggy Lutz

Wearable Art

This unique fabric is made using a technique called salt dyeing. White silk crepe is stretched and hand painted in a water-color fashion by master colorist Janet Joslin. Salt and alcohol are added to pull the dye in different directions, creating wonderful abstract formations under her expert hand. After drying, the fabric is steamed for at least six hours, then washed and ironed by hand.

The resulting fabric has been pre-washed and is color fast. It can be washed by hand or dry cleaned

Choose from among this one-of-a-kind silk treasures and consult with us to have your chosen garment made.

Current Slither/Slinky Swatches

Everyone's favorite Basic Fabric, the marvelous Slither (aka Slinky) is acetate/lycra and machines washes cold, tumbles dry low, and emerges from the drier ready to wear. It's a traveler's delight! Many of our clients are devoted to this fabric, and we at PLP love it for many reasons, including that it's stretchy-ness makes long distance fitting a breeze.
